Thanks to the Joliet Historical Museum, Joliet Slammers, and The Old Joliet Prison for an unforgettable historic event! the threat of and eventual rain didn't stop the excitement and fun that was had by all. The Joliet Slammers, in conjunction with the Joliet Area Historical Museum, are continuing to bring baseball back to life at the Old Joliet Prison as they gear up for “The Big House Ballgame” on Thursday, April 30th with festivities starting at 12:00 p.m. and a 3:05 p.m. first pitch. The event will feature prison-inspired uniforms modeled after designs discovered within the walls of the Old Joliet Prison. With support from Dr Pepper and the Route 66 Centennial Commission, the Slammers have brought the historic yellow and black jersey design back to life—adding another authentic element to The Big House Ballgame experience. On the day of the game, fans will have the opportunity to bid on the historic game-worn jerseys through the team’s online auction platform, DASH. Fans are encouraged to keep an eye out on all of the team’s social channels for more information. In addition, the first 1,000 fans through the prison gates will receive a commemorative tin cup giveaway in partnership with Eames Law Group. This giveaway serves as a nod to daily life inside the prison. “The Big House Ballgame is about celebrating the Route 66 Centennial and creating lasting memories for the Joliet community in a truly unique setting,” said Night Train Veeck, EVP of the Joliet Slammers. “From the uniforms and giveaway, to the atmosphere, this will be one of the most memorable events in team history.” The Route 66 Centennial Celebration is set to kick off Thursday, April 30th with gates opening at 12:00 p.m., with pregame blues performances, Route 66-themed entertainment and a historic exhibition game as the Joliet Slammers face off with Frontier League rival, the Gateway Grizzlies.

What an unforgettable evening it was at North Island Park on Friday, June 26! This year's celebration kicked off with an exhilarating performance by the band Fire Chicken, setting the stage for an electrifying show from Hi Infidelity. Attendees enjoyed a mouthwatering variety of food trucks and refreshing beverages from the concession stand. The event was packed with family-friendly activities, including a kids' play zone and face painting. The night concluded with a breathtaking fireworks display that lit up the sky—a true celebration of freedom and community! We sincerely appreciate the town of Wilmington for welcoming us back to the Let Freedom Rock concert and celebration for the third consecutive year! Everyone enjoyed celebrating America's 250th birthday!

The Garfield Ridge neighborhood kicked off the Christmas season Dec. 6 with its 10th annual Christmas Tree Lighting at the Wentworth Park Ice Rink. It has become a tradition on the Southwest Side that not only brings the festivities to Clear-Ridge but also offers a time for community residents to come together to celebrate the holidays.  Since its inception almost a decade ago, the Christmas Tree Lighting was originally organized by the Garfield Ridge Entertainment Group but was passed on to the neighborhood watch. Under the guidance and organization of the Garfield Ridge Neighborhood Watch, the tree lighting has grown and now includes staples such as the kiddy train rides, petting zoo, face painting, Santa’s entrance on the fire engine, and free pictures with Santa. As the years continue, more traditions are tacked onto the tree lighting for community residents to enjoy and create memories.  Al Cacciottolo, president of the Garfield Ridge Neighborhood Watch, started off the ceremony with introductions and thanked all those who volunteered, sponsored, and supported the night’s festivities. The Tree Lighting would not be possible without the Chicago Park District, Garfield Ridge Neighborhood Watch, volunteers, DJ Tommy, All Exterior Contractor, State Farm’s Mike Readorn, and the support of community leaders.

Route 66 Mobile Diner had the pleasure of serving a remarkable two hundred and fifty guests over the course of three bustling shifts. Our signature dish, "The Blackstone" Reuben, was a standout favorite among the attendees. This delectable sandwich features Guinness slow-roasted corned beef brisket, cooked to perfection to ensure a melt-in-your-mouth experience. Accompanying the savory brisket are generous portions of boiled cabbage, which adds a delightful crunch and a nod to traditional Irish fare. To complete the meal, we included roasted red potatoes and carrots, providing a hearty and wholesome side that perfectly complements the main dish.
